5 Ways Kat Von D Changed the Beauty Industry—Yes, Really!

She makes even red lipstick feel fresh and edgy.

You know those girls who are confident yet down to earth, edgy yet girly, ambitious yet fun? Kat Von D is basically all of the above wrapped into one, so it’s hard not to learn some tips from her.

From her killer tattoos to her rock-star hair to her smoky-eyed perfection, the girl knows a thing or two about owning personal style. For all these reasons, it makes sense that her beauty line is flying off the shelves at Sephora.

We caught up with Kat to get the 411 on how she became the queen of tough-girl beauty and why it probably isn’t the best idea to get a tattoo of your first boyfriend’s name on your body. Here’s why she’s the cool older sister you’ve always wanted.

1. She’s made tattoos a girl thing.
Remember when a sleeve of tattoos seemed to be limited to male rock stars? Kat wasn’t having that. She got her first ink when she was 14 (not that we recommend following her lead with that detail!), and was at the forefront of a major tattoo movement (we still watch LA Ink marathons). “Tattooing has been embraced by a lot of people—especially women,” she says. “A lot of the negative stigmas have dissipated. They’re a beautiful form of self-expression and a way to wear your heart on your sleeve.” Literally.

2. But she’s smart about what she’ll set in stone.
“When first-timers come to see me, I’ll turn them away if what they’re asking for goes against my morals,” she explains. “And if I can tell someone is going to regret their choice, I won’t do it. Tattoos aren’t going anywhere, so they should always make you happy.” So, sleep on it for a bit before your trip to the parlor.

3. She shares the beauty wealth!
Kat’s made it possible to nail her signature red lip. Her Studded Kiss Lipstick is the number-one selling lipstick in all of Sephora (think about how many lipsticks it competes with!), and for good reason. Each shade is super-creamy and packed with rich pigment. “All you really need is a good shade of lipstick without any bells and whistles,” she explains. We couldn’t agree more.

4. She’s redefined what it means to be a “bad girl.”
According to Kat, being bad doesn’t necessarily mean, well, being bad. “I think confidence is the most beautiful attribute anyone can have,” she says. “You don’t have to be so extreme [when it comes to your makeup]. It’s about how you carry yourself. Go for a softer approach simply by trying a Marilyn Monroe vibe with a classic cat eye and a red or nude lip.”

5. She’s invented the most fool-proof liquid liner.
If you aren’t ready to take the plunge and get inked, at least go out and buy Kat’s Tattoo Liner. It’s so easy to use (even for those with the shakiest of hands), and adds a touch of bad ass beauty to any look. Plus, it washes off with makeup remover so you’re only committing for the day.
